The short version

Linalool is a small, naturally-occurring alcohol molecule found in more than two hundred plants: lavender most famously, and also basil, bay leaf, coriander seed and rosewood. It is one of the two molecules that give lavender its lavender-ness. The other, linalyl acetate, is its acetylated cousin and behaves much the same way. Between them they account for something like half the oil by weight in a good English lavender.
What it appears to do
Inhaled linalool has been studied for around two decades in animal models of anxiety and sleep. The mechanism most often proposed involves the GABA-A receptor, the same broad family of inhibitory receptors that benzodiazepines, ethanol and some sleep aids act on, by very different routes. In cell work linalool does behave as a positive allosteric modulator there, raising GABA-evoked currents by roughly sixty per cent — though at concentrations well above anything a nose is likely to meet.1 In mice, the calming effect of linalool depends on smelling it: it vanishes in mice that cannot smell, and it is abolished by flumazenil, which points to benzodiazepine-responsive GABA-A signalling somewhere in the brain rather than to the molecule reaching those receptors itself.2 When GABA-A signalling increases in general, the nervous system tends to damp down — heart rate eases, breathing settles, cortical arousal drops away. Whether an inhaled trace of linalool moves that dial by any measurable amount in a given person is a separate question, and one the human studies have struggled to answer.
Two things are worth saying plainly. The GABA-A effect of linalool, even in the studies that report it cleanly, is modest, and far smaller than that of a pharmaceutical sedative. And a good portion of the response people have to lavender is “top-down”. The smell carries expectation and learned safety. Volunteers who inhale lavender oil do show a quieter autonomic picture — lower blood pressure and heart rate, more theta and alpha in the EEG — though a study of that shape cannot tell you how much of it is the molecule and how much is what the nose already knows.3 Whatever the molecule contributes, it arrives already wrapped in association.
What the human studies show
Across a number of small randomised trials, inhaling linalool-rich lavender before bed has been associated with modest improvements in self-reported sleep quality and modest reductions in pre-sleep heart rate. A meta-analysis of thirty-four trials of inhaled aromatherapy — lavender the most common oil among them — found a moderate benefit on sleep outcomes, somewhat larger in people with a diagnosed condition than in the general population, though the trials varied a great deal between themselves and blinding was rated poor in most of them.4
The trials are mostly small, the blinding is difficult when the intervention has a smell, and the outcomes are largely what people report rather than what a laboratory measures. None of this makes lavender a treatment for insomnia, and nothing in the literature suggests it stands in for cognitive-behavioural therapy. What the evidence describes is a small effect at the edges of a bedtime, which is a reasonable thing for a scent to be.
Much of what lavender does at the bedside may be the work of familiarity, with the chemistry playing a supporting part.
The company it keeps
Linalool rarely acts alone. In the herbal tradition it sits beside α-bisabolol, the smoothing molecule of German chamomile, and the slower, woodier molecules of cedarwood: cedrol, which small olfactory studies associate with a lower heart rate, and the sandalwood-like notes that have traditionally been kept beside it. Between them they are a good part of why a lavender-and-chamomile pillow, or a cedar-lined drawer, has such a long history of use at bedtime. This is background science about the herbs themselves, not a claim about any product.
A few cautions
- Linalool is one of the EU-listed fragrance allergens.
- Oxidised linalool, from old or poorly-stored lavender oil, can become more sensitising.
- Cats metabolise some terpenes poorly, which is why diffusing essential oils in rooms they share is generally discouraged.
